We have a busy month ahead of us. Ms. Jamieson has been working with her 6th -8th grade drama students and some younger after school students since January on a creative and interesting, multi-media production of Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie. Shows will be Thursday, May 3, at 1:00pm and 7:00pm and Friday, May 4 at 10:00am and 1:00pm. We are looking forward to the production.

After School Session III has just begun. There are still slots available in 3Point Athletics, Yoga and Chess Wizards. If you are interested, please contact Ms. Smagacz.

The week of April 30 – May 4 in National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. The history of National Teacher Appreciation Week is not clear. The movement is commonly believed to have begun around the time of World War II. In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. National Teacher Week was established in 1985 and has been celebrated annually since that time. While the history might be murky, the message has always been clear. It is important to honor our educators and acknowledge the crucial role teachers and other staff members play in making sure every student receives a quality education. Many of us remember teachers who played important roles in our own lives. We should recognize the important role that educators play all year, but please make a special effort this week to express your gratitude to your child’s teacher or other staff members. PTA will provide vases in every room. Send a flower to a teacher. By the end of the week, the school will be blooming with color.

Schools have not yet received their budgets for next school year. The process should begin next week and the messages we have been receiving have not been hopeful. We are generally hearing about major deficits systemwide. Our vision for Franklin is a bold one that requires sufficient funding. There are many positions and educational support materials that have always been supplemented by Friends of Franklin funds. This year is no different. In fact, the importance of raising additional funds this year might be more critical than ever. The Friends of Franklin spring fundraiser, Lights, Camera, Auction, will be held this Friday evening, April 27, from 7:00 – 11:00 at the Hotel Allegro. Tracy Norman, Debbie Pritzker, Angela Strater-Naro, Jo Mills, Christina Schneider, and Lisa Goduco, as well as many, many other committee members and room parents have been working tirelessly to make this event a success. Now we need you to attend and have a great time. If you have not already done so, please buy your ticket.

Everyone knows that when the temperature rises outside, the classrooms at Franklin get steamy, and next year students will be in the school building an extra hour each day. The Raise the Paddle at this year’s fundraiser will be to purchase air conditioners. Putting an air conditioner in a school is not as simple as going to Sears and purchasing a window unit. Each unit will be expensive. We are planning to begin with the library, where all students will benefit, and where teachers often hold meetings. Please support this initiative.

I hope to see everyone on the red carpet at Lights, Camera, Auction on Friday night.
